Fing Your Niche Market
A guide to internet niche marketing
The best way to start a home based internet business is to find an untapped niche market and begin to exploit that niche.
But what is a niche market, and how do you identify one?
A niche is simply a very narrow, targeted subsection of a larger market. For instance, if the larger market is for tea, a niche in this market might be oolong tea or green tea.
Why is targeting a niche so important in internet marketing? Because the competition for broader topics is simply too fierce and dominated by large sites.
While it is still possible to succeed and thrive in a niche, at is all but impossible to establish a new site in a broad market.
Take my example market above, "tea". In the screen shot below are the Google search results for the word "tea".
As you can see in the above screen shot, the top three sites in the Google search results have Pageranks of 7, 6 and 6 respectively.
These are very established and trusted sites which would be all but impossible to beat in the search rankings.
While Pagerank is not by any means the sole criteria used in determining positions in the search results, it is an important component.
As a general rule, you can reasonably expect to compete with sites with Pageranks of 5 or under.
Now let's take a look at a niche of the tea market, "oolong tea" (which is simply a popular variety of tea).
The screenshot below show the Google search results for the term "oolong tea":
As you can see above, the top two sites in the Google search results for the term "oolong tea" have pageranks of 4 and 3 respectively.
Therefore, "oolong tea" looks like a niche worth investigating.
You can evaluate niches yourself in the same manner. In order to dow so, you must download the free Firefox browser here.
Then, you simply need to install the free SEO for Firefox extension here.
The extension allows you to see the pagerank, inbound links (backlinks), and page count of each of the sites competing for a search term.
This is a very valuable tool in avaluating niches. You can learn more about using the Firefox extension here.
Now if this all seems a bit intimidating or confusing, there is a much simpler way to evaluate niches.
